Editor’s Note ✍️
Hello there,
Hope you’re well :)
This is Yash here. We’re slowly approaching that part of the year when an entire cohort graduates from universities across India, with one question in mind - how do I prepare myself to apply to and land jobs/roles! Sharing a framework that has worked me, and many, many others I’ve known of over the past 6 years - The 5 R’s so to speak:
1)Reflect - have that conversation with yourself, that why is it that you wish work in the field, the job, the organisation, or even the role that you have chosen to work in and are considering applying to. Even if you're at that stage in life wherein you're just looking to work and are open almost anything within a field, do have that sense of why is that the case and what motivates you. It'll allow you to make a lot more informed choices for yourself, and that really matters in terms of how you apply, the story you tell, roles you end up considering etc.
2) Research - once you have a particular field locked in, do as much research and in-depth analysis as you can about it. Figure out what are the organisations that work in the space that you have chosen, what roles do they usually hire for, what skills do they need, what kind of experience some of these candidates currently in those roles have et cetera. Linkedin can be a good ally for such an exercise, but of course do also reach out to individuals and institutions. The more thorough that you can be in this prep, just places you on a better footing overall even once you've landed a role.
3) Ready - the third pillar would be to now prepare yourself and ready yourself for applying to a roughly appropriate set of roles and organisations in the field of your choice. This entails investing time to work on your resume, LinkedIn, personal website, and in the due process also building up an understanding overall about yourself as a candidate, the skills that you bring, your motivation for applying to some of these roles, and so on, because that would heavily influence what you share via these platforms and documents to begin with. and that does matter a lot.
4) Reach out - Think you have reached a stage now very well, prepared to apply for the roles that you have shortlisted? The next step would be to reach out. That entails two things – one is to simply apply to the relevant job openings that you come across with the best version of your resume, LinkedIn, website, work portfolio. The other piece of this step is to also reach out to individuals as well as institutions in general from the space that you're interested in, ask them if you can chat with them, learn from the experiences, build those bridges, see if you can land a referral etc. All of this can and will be a lot more useful than you think.
5) Repeat - last, but certainly not the least. If after the structured approach to landing a job and after a couple of months or so of trying to it out, you still find yourself out of luck – repeat the cycle again while trying to identify what errors you might have made the previous instance, and what can you possibly do better. Do not give up, it will work out!
