🗞️What’s In The News This Week?
The Union Cabinet approved India’s formal accession to the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA). The treaty commitment grants Indian deep-sea fishing vessels statutory rights to operate in international waters (beyond Exclusive Economic Zones) in the Southern Indian Ocean.
What this means for India?
Indian-flagged vessels can be authorised to fish for squid, toothfish, alfonsino and other non-migratory stocks. This supports the Blue Economy push beyond India’s EEZ, where vessels mostly operate within 60–80 nautical miles.
India takes on binding duties: vessel monitoring, data reporting and quota compliance. It also gains access to stock assessments and the High Seas Boarding and Inspection (HSBI) Scheme, which strengthens maritime security.
