Dear Reader, Trust you’re well :) In this week’s newsletter, we share insights from a Pew Research Centre survey revealing a mixed global perception of India and Prime Minister Modi's leadership. We also highlight the urgent need for addressing health inequities as emphasised by the WHO’s World Health Day 2024 slogan, “My Health, My Right.”
Exciting opportunities await with the opening of applications for the Axis PPiA Fellowship, allowing young professionals to drive change in marginalised communities. Additionally, our recent community meet-up in Delhi fostered engaging discussions on careers in public policy, featuring valuable insights from experts in the field.
P.S. If you're hiring for freelance roles in public policy or social impact, please comment on our weekly Jobs Post. This Week’s Policy Focus 🔎
A survey from Pew Research Centre titled "Views of India Lean Positive Across 23 Countries" highlights that 46% of adults globally view India favourably, contrasting with 34% who hold unfavourable opinions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has substantial support in India, with a substantial majority expressing a favourable view. However, internationally, confidence in Modi's foreign policy is mixed, with only 37% of respondents in 12 countries trusting his leadership. The survey also notes a decline in India's favourability in Europe, especially in France, where positive views plummeted from 70% in 2008 to 39% in 2023. Additionally, three-quarters of Indians view Pakistan unfavourably, and India stands out as the only middle-income country with a majority expressing negative opinions of China, reflecting deep-seated geopolitical tensions.

▶️Video Highlight:
👉🏽 The Centre for Social and Economic Progress hosted a seminar titled “Why Land is Expensive in India and What Can Be Done About It,” featuring a discussion between Independent Economist Gurbachan Singh and CSEP Senior Fellow Shishir Gupta. They highlighted that regulatory constraints, rather than market fundamentals, drive high land prices in India, emphasising the need for policy reforms to improve housing affordability and stimulate economic growth.
👥 Community Updates:
👉🏽 PPI hosted a Winter Coffee Policy community Meet-up last week at Blue Tokai in New Delhi! A small group engaged in lively discussions about careers in public policy, featuring insights from Dr. Axel Baisch on contrasting approaches to public policy making in Europe and India. We also discussed the specifics of how one can build a career in the policy space in the European Union.
The idea is to organise regular in-person meet-ups, workshops and other career activities around the year to help you grow and learn. Most knowledge in the broader public policy and social impact space resides with individuals, and is not institutionally captured. Knowledge transfer occurs most effectively when one gets to meet others :)
P.S: We're looking for enthusiastic individuals to step up as City Chapter Leaders/Coordinators for Public Policy India (PPI). This is a completely voluntary role that requires a commitment of just 2-3 hours per week, allowing you to contribute while balancing your other responsibilities.
If you're interested, please reply to this e-mail with a couple of suggestions on how PPI can better engage its community members via WhatsApp, along with a link to your LinkedIn profile. Looking forward to hearing from you!
