Dear Reader, Hope you're doing well! This week in Policy Charcha, we delve into a crucial question: Why does the world’s largest democracy still lack a globally recognised public policy school? Despite immense talent, decision-making remains centralised—so what would it take to build an institution that truly shapes policy and governance in India?
We’re also excited to announce PPI’s in-person policy community meet-up in Mumbai in partnership with Kautilya School of Public Policy! Join us on Saturday, 8th March. More details will be shared on our communities—stay tuned!
For our video highlight, we investigate why India’s cities remain unclean despite ambitious policies. While India aims for global leadership, local governments still struggle to provide basic sanitation. What’s holding them back?
In Climate + Health Corner, we spotlight a UNICEF brief (2000-2022) on how climate change is worsening access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for adolescent girls—70% of whom bear the burden of water collection in off-premises households.
Do consider supporting PPI by buying us a coffee ☕ (or two!) if you’ve found our work to be valuable :)
With that, we bring to you: Policy Post #174!

Despite numerous promises and schemes, waste continues to pile up, leaving citizens frustrated. What’s really going wrong? This video dives into the challenges local bodies face and why achieving universal cleanliness remains an unfulfilled goal in India.
