This Week’s Policy Focus 🔎
India leads in sustainable food consumption, with its dietary practices identified as the least harmful among G20 nations in the WWF’s Living Planet Report 2024. If all countries adopted India’s approach, global food production would need only 0.84 Earths by 2050. This contrasts sharply with Argentina, whose consumption patterns would require 7.4 Earths. The report praises India’s National Millet Campaign, noting millets’ climate resilience and potential for future food security. Sustainable diets, including alternative proteins like legumes, nutri-cereals, and algae, are highlighted as essential for reducing land use and emissions.

A study compares human capital development in China and India, linking it to economic divergence since the 1980s. China emphasised widespread, vocational, and engineering education, fostering manufacturing growth, while India prioritised tertiary education with less focus on primary literacy and vocational training. This approach led to higher educational inequality and a service-oriented economy in India, with many trapped in low-productivity agriculture.

The Vande Bharat, India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train, has evolved from a nearly scrapped project in 2017 to a symbol of Indian Railways’ modernisation. Since its launch in 2019, the train’s popularity and demand have spurred plans for 800 new variants by 2030, worth an estimated Rs 2 lakh crore in manufacturing opportunities. Despite challenges like track upgrades and manufacturing delays, Vande Bharat’s development aims to enhance India’s railway speed, comfort, and manufacturing capacity, with potential for exports in the coming decade.
