🗞️What’s In The News This Week?
What?: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, making Indian Standard Time (IST) the single official time reference across official, commercial, and legal operations.
How?: Stakeholders, including telecom operators, financial exchanges, power grids, and tech companies, have been given a 180-day transition window to synchronize their digital systems and hardware clocks with IST.
Why?: Using Indian timing systems, including atomic clocks and NavIC, will reduce India’s dependence on foreign satellite-based time sources for critical infrastructure. This can help reduce potential national security risks to critical digital infrastructure. However, smaller enterprises and regional banks will face compliance costs upgrading legacy server hardware.
What next?: This has reignited the long-standing debate on whether Northeast India needs a separate time zone.

Studies examining the impact of job loss on health in Austria, the USA and elsewhere have found that unemployment is associated with higher mortality rates and negative effects on mental health and children’s health.
Unemployed people in Denmark did not experience these health effects.
What did Denmark do differently?
In Denmark, unemployment insurance replaces 90% of lost wages, with a cap, which was roughly equivalent to US$628 per week. Unemployed people can receive these transfers for up to four years. They also have access to job search assistance, training programmes and other active labour market policies. This support is complemented by universal health insurance.
